I get sick and tired of people only liking Bob Marley solely for the fact that he smoked “ganja”…  Here in America he is seen as nothing more than a smiling Jamaican that’s always “stoned out of his mind”. I’ve see his name and image being used to sell products such as coffee ,energy drinks and even at Moe’s southwest bar and grill! Such a shame that some people see him as something of a “novelty.”
To many Bob Marley is a symbol of Revolution.During the wicked Apartheid regime that held South Africa captive for 40+ years, the freedom fighters would listen to Marley’s music before they would go into battle particularly from his 1979 conscious themed album titled “Survival” with songs like “Zimbabwe”
-“Every man gotta right to decide his own destiny, And in this judgement there is no partiality. So arm in arms, with arms, we’ll fight this little struggle, ‘Cause that’s the only way we can overcome our little trouble”
To many Bob Marley is a symbol of peace. During the violent and bloody elections of Jamaica during the 1970’s between the JLP and The PNP and their street gangs. Marley was seen as ” the voice of the people” and the politicians sought to use him for their own crooked political gain. When Marley refused to endorse either party, Political gunmen came to “settle the debt”. After narrowly escaping with his life,Marley went into exile in London.
Upon his return to the island, he along with the leaders of the political gangs got together to stage a “truce concert” to stop all the blood shed from the elections. During his set he brought up both political leaders and put both their hands together in a symbol of brotherly love and peace and gave a benediction like prayer to finally put an end to a bloody campaign. He later received a medal from the United Nations for his peaceful efforts.
To some Marley is even considered a deity! In Nepal he is worshiped as the reincarnation of Vishnu! In Jamaica he is considered a national hero alongside figures such as Marcus Garvey and Paul Bogle! Wherever their is strife and injustice in the world, Marleys music will be there to light the fuse of revolution.
To me personally Marley music is all of the above…. When I am down and out, his music uplifts me. When I am angry about a political situation, his music calms me. When I need to just feel good, his music does just that. When I need inspiration, he inspires me.  Marley along with the Wailers have a song for every mood and situation in life.

a sad and seemingly forgotten part of American history… The plight of the Native Americans.  I am proud of the Native American blood that runs through my veins.
